While researching the importance of dog training one of the things I discovered is that in Canada alone over 1 million cats and dogs are left in shelters.  Over ONE million!  For many of these animals life is pretty bleak. They no longer have homes because they have been labeled with having "behavioral problems" and are rejected. All animals are brought to shelters for various reasons but probably the most common reason that a dog ends up in shelters may be realized in such statements as…”my dog has  behavioural problems” ...or …”I just can not handle this dog”…or…  ”I didn’t know this animal would be so hard to take care of!”  Once a cute little puppy is brought home and begins to do puppy things it seems cute at first but this 'cuteness' soon begins to wear off. He pees on the rug, howls at night, chews leather shoes, nips and bits, barks and bolts in every different direction possible.  As he grows he gets 'worse' and pretty soon he has developed 'behavioral problems', he no longer fits in as a pet and he has become a nuisance.  Just by taking a few simple, easy lessons owners can happily enjoy many years of pride, affection and undying, unconditional love from their obedient and attentive dogs !!

One of the most important reasons is making sure your dog comes to you when you call. I think one of the saddest things I ever experienced was a neighbour's dog dying in my arms on the side of the road, all because he wasn't trained to come when called!  He ran from his owner out into the street and was struck by a car.  He died before anyone could take him to the vet.  I held him in my arms while trying to console one of the dog's 'kid', a nine year old who saw his dog get hit. The driver of the car didn't stop...
